Dick Cheney gets a heart pump. You just know how those republicans just "love" socialized medicine as long as it's only for them. What the articles on Cheney's surgery fail to mention is that the pump is an impeller hooked directly to the heart meaning that he now has no heartbeat. Like the zombie he is they just might not be able to tell if he's dead or alive should he be in a dead sleep (pun intended). My guess is that he's not long for this world. Sorry Dick I never did save any of that asbestos I removed so you could make a hereafter suit out of it.

BP goes with the on again off again and on again testing of the shut off. Hey morons! Why didn't you leave the collection pipes in place while you jacked off trying to figure out whether you were going to go ahead with this operation? Now there'll be another couple million gallons of oil in the Gulf.

I see the cops in New Orleans that shot people trying to escape Hurricane Katrina will be headed to jail. Maybe there is just a little justice left in this country.

Monday mixed nuts

North Korea shakes it's fist at South Korea after sinking one of it's war ships. Isn't that like the bully threatening to hit you again after he just punched you in the stomach? I'm not too concerned about North Korea because they went to China a couple of weeks ago and asked China for financial help but were turned down. So Kim Jong huffed off back to North Korea in a snit. Sorry Kim China helped you in the past, you wouldn't take their advice but you had no problem taking their money.

The oil just keeps gushing in the Gulf as the worlds largest spill continues. BP keeps fiddle farting around. Hey guys you've had a month to come up with a solution. I could think of a dozen ways by now. My guess would be that they're trying to figure out a way to save this well without further damage to their bottom line. If you want to keep up on the latest with live video pop over to fellow blogger's place Monkeyfister I'm sure he's shaking his monkey fist at them.

You'll note that the unemployment numbers went down last week. The reason? Not that there was any great increase in hiring. It's that people's unemployment ran out. When that happens you're no longer counted as being unemployed. You are now a non person. I remember seeing photos of the bread lines of the last Great Depression and noticing that a lot of the guys in three piece suits and was told that many were from Wall Street. Well it looks like they figured out a way to cover their own asses this time around now doesn't it? Oh terror of terrors we had to give up the vacation house on Cape Cod and switch to domestic wines.

BP exec Tony Haywood predicts oil spill damage to be "modest". Yeah right pal. Can I buy a short on that?

Speaking of shorts Germany is going to ban some shorts. We should have done that a long time ago. What's a short? It's betting that an investment will fail or go down in price. Kind of like buying insurance only you don't have to own the investment product you're insuring. Think of it like heading to the local nursing home and being able to insure the patients even if you aren't related.

Funny how with all this oil leaking into the gulf and the price of oil is now going down. That never happened in the past. In the past when there was any type of interuption or event oil would jump in price. I guess the speculators are running for cover. But the next bubble? That would be gold. There's no good reason gold should be as high as it is. People aren't running out to buy rings or jewlery and manufacturers aren't using tons of it in their processes. And if you're thinking of selling watch out. There's enough scams out there. Remember you heard it here first.

Still waiting for the state to work out the weatherization program. I heard while I was taking my weatherization supervisor course that they added yet another 6 billion dollars to the program. That makes $21 billion and not a dime has made it to the local level.

President Obama goes to Buffalo for Buffalo wings. I'm just glad he didn't go to Humptulips.

As I figured BP fudged the blowout preventer tests. No state or federal inspector was there to verify that the tests were done properly according to a whistle blower. How'd they do it? Simple, instead of running the test for the required five minutes they ran it at 30 seconds then penned in to make it look like it was done for five.

So here we go chasing the Talaban and Al Qaeda all around the middle east. Got news for ya I just had an infestation of ants. I'd clean and spray one area and the ants would just move to where I wasn't. Sound familiar? At least I don't have to spend hundreds of billions getting rid of these guys.

And like zombies the Cavs fade into the sunset. So kitty doesn't have to worry because these bumbling stumbling zombies can't hurt you.

Misc. madness

Proposal Worries Banks Boo hoo. Congress wants to take away the banks' gambling money. Derivatives would be done by an outside company. Republicans are of course against any regulations. So where do you think they get all their money? And the Dems aren't much better in that respect.

We have the Ipad and Russia has the Club-K. What's a Club-K you ask? It's two cruise missiles packaged in a truck trailer container. They plan to sell it for 10 to $20 million each to countries like Iran and Venezuela. Great now any small country can have destruction in a box. I hear this thing can take out an aircraft carrier. And since this thing looks like your average ocean type shipping container it would be easy to hide in plane sight.


Bush has a book coming out in November. Gee and I don't have any crayons.

Still no work and on that note I must say the actual unemployment figures are far more than reported. I'd say more like 16 or 17%. Guess I'll just go eat some chocolate.

Yesterday

With the weather so nice yesterday I was out and about on moss patrol. We don't have to shovel snow here but moss is a different story. Much rather get rid of a little moss than break my back shoveling. The weather here is said to be much like England and speaking of which I popped over to Four Dinners Scooter Forums radio broadcast. Got there a little late. A bit hard to follow the boys as they must have downed a few pints by the time I got there. Gee Dinners you sure don't write with a heavy accent. :-) And now I know what a barclays is... Doh! And no you can't shag Joan Jett because she's doing a gig over here in the northwest this weekend.

Oh how times have changed

Used to be you could walk just about anywhere in most cities without being hassled. Now you wonder if you aren't taking your life in your own hands by stepping out at night. If gangs don't get you then some depressed laid off neighbor might be wanting to eliminate his family over a playstation or ipod argument. They say drinking and drug use is up and we all know what that leads to. Always thought that was interesting that if you go in for treatment the first thing they ask you is are you on any medication or have you been drinking? And when you tell them no they immediately put you on some medication. And now they're trying to decriminalize drug use here. I'm kind of on the fence with that. On the one hand what you do in your own home is your business, but knowing what people do if they are given an inch is the other issue. I hear the pot of today is far more potent than it was 20 or 30 years ago and can just picture an SUV with a driver with a joint in one hand and the cell phone texting in the other. Gee ma I told you I was a multitasker as he/she runs right into the utility pole or worse.

And now we are all suspects even without cause. It doesn't matter who you are or what you're doing because habeus corpus is no more especially in Britain. I don't think I could live in that country. Hear it's getting to the point that they have more CCTV cameras than people. I'd be tempted to put up a website with a rectal camera just to prove to the bobbies I had nothing to hide. "You suspect me officer?" "Well then let's forgo the search and you can check out my latest web pictures." "How do you like that mate?"
Ah yes the insanity of it all.

What to do about Haiti? You thought New Orleans was bad. But as the Coz always said there's always worse. So what to do?
Should they all just be evacuated and bulldoze what's left? Or use the country for military target practice.
There's nothing left there in the way of resources. They were just getting over a couple of hurricanes and now this.

U.S. threatens Iran if they don't quit their nuclear program. What are we going to do throw spitballs at them? Our military is stretched to the max and they know it. If we or anyone else attacks they'll start shooting missles at Israel in retaliation.

Health care is slowly moving forward. Normally I wouldn't care that much one way or another but when you're out of work you lose your coverage. A whole lot of us have done just that. And that 46 million figure they talk about with no coverage is bull because every month another couple hundred thousand have lost coverage. When you're on unemployment you can't afford to buy a COBRA. There's a snake that would devour your bank account in short order. I'm still leaning towards a national sales tax to pay to cover everyone. Slap a 4% federal tax on all non food items then you could lower the state sales tax since it would get a bunch of money off the states' back as well as businesses. And this way you don't need any penalties for people who don't sign up. Everybody gets covered and it would keep Medicare and Medicade solvent.

I see people are starting to leave Floruba. Seems the high cost of living and low wages are driving people out. Isn't this how republicans want it? Where do they think their groundskeepers and pool boys are going to live? In another state and commute? To top it off the cost of electricity, hurricane insurance and property taxes are about set to go up. Dang Dana looks like you got to the party late on this one.

Looks like they're going to build a pipe line from Alberta Canada down to the midwest. They'll be pumping the oil from the oil sands up there some of the dirtiest oil in the world. My guess is that we're setting up for when we get out of Iraq and they don't sell us any of their oil. The problem with the sand oil is that it takes more energy to extract it than you get out of it. Hummm. Where have I heard of that happening before? Oh yes it's the same for nuclear energy. What ever happened to the clean renewable energy that Obama was all for?

Here's a tie in to the above. Our state is now giving out funds for training for out of work folks like myself. For things like weatherization and "green jobs". I even got a letter in the mail saying I could get $5300 covered. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but training for what? There aren't any jobs out there other than on call fill in positions or jobs that require a specific four year degree. And Boeing just laid off another 200 last week.

Just went to help a relative with some dental work. We need to fix this broken system fast. Went to the office and they had (I kid you not) four people just to handle the paperwork. It landed up costing him $4700 and that was with a discount plan and that was only for 1/2 the work. To boot this was the cheapest place he could find. I wonder if eyeballs and teeth will be part of the health care plan?

Friday mixed nuts

We had some nasty hot weather here last week with a couple of people dying from the heat. But no sooner did the local coffee stand put up a sign about ice cold shakes than the weather changed like somebody flipping a switch. It's one of those odditys of life I tell you. It can be dry for weeks on end but once you drag out the sprinkler and give the plants a good soaking it will rain hard the next day. An indian rain dance could do no better. And why is it that when your up to your eyeballs in work with offers of overtime that at least two other companies call wanting your services. It's feast or famine hot dogs or steak. It's a conspiracy I tell you. The forces of the universe having their own town hall meeting except they all agree to screw with the human.

Speaking of town hall meetings they're having one up here next week and I'm half tempted to go, take pictures and post them here. Sort of a moron montage if you will. This sure sounds like the death rasps of the republican party.

And speaking of the republican party I hear Mel Martinez senator from Florida is calling it quits. Florida must have been holding its' breath as of late because I hear it's starting to turn blue. I guess if the republicans in that state don't like it they can all scamper over to Texas and together can all succeed from the union. But with a wall around the new country who'd do all the manual labor for all those senior citizens. No unions there. And by leaving the union they'd be giving up that evil social security and medicare. But don't worry about grandma because there'll be plenty of room under the overpasses down there for her but she better empty her retirement fund to try and pay for medical insurance. And as soon as the insurance company drains all her retirement money and makes that $146 billion profit they'll kick her to the curb.

Speaking of curbs anyone of us could land up on the curb even though they say the economy is doing better. We've gone from a spirting wound to a mere dripping of blood in terms of unemployment. The patient isn't dead but he sure is looking peked. In my calls to potential employers this week I got to talk to a couple of company owners and I must say they weren't sounding to enthused. No work now is the repeated phrase.

Will the last person leaving Detroit... turn off the lights!

I've seen this before. It happened in Seattle in the late 70s. Back then it was a different story. It was based on the aircraft industry that goes through booms and busts. I came out here in the early 80s when I heard that the Steel mills of the rust belt were shutting down. It wasn't an easy start but I knew that the area would come back stronger as airline orders picked up and the economy here expanded with high tech and computer industries. For the most part things have been okay until now. There was always some work to be had even in the depths of the recessions of the 80s 90s and for a time around 2000. So I can feel for the people of Detroit. Like the steel mills of the past car companies won't be comming back. And with the auto companies down many other support companies have left that area. Want to buy a cheap house? Then Detroit is your place. But don't expect to pop down to the local supermarket for groceries because they're gone. I can only imagine the crime rate there as desperate people vie for any scraps of work left. I recall back in the 80s one gal offered to scrub the streets with bare hands if someone would just hire her.

So where are we now? It's been reported that unemployment claims are leveling off. That may be true but I question that. Is the real unemployment rate really going down or are people who have been on unemployment so long that their claims are running out? The maximum was 26 weeks with two 13 week extentions. This all started in December of 2007. The door on construction slammed shut. I feel sorry for those that thought it was going to be a short recession. Many of them are part of the homeless camps now and I think we'll see more as things continue. We'll also see the other ugly side of a down economy, more banks robbed, more home invasion robberies, more violence and theft. But that's not the worst part of it. The worst part is the waiting. Hoping that some company will call back with a job that might come up in the future. And then there's the companies that sit waiting and hoping for business. They've put out their ads, made their cold calls and hope for better times. They've cut their costs to beyond the bone. So with no government or corporate spending yet we sit and wait and hope that we've saved enough.

Not much for "Mothers Day"

I think I celebrate holidays more out of tradition than anything else. Anymore it doesn't make much sense. We do what we do because we have chosen to do it. We are tied to our primal instincts. I think we're more tied to our bioligical make up than we'd care to admit. There's a hormonal drive to reproduce weather man or woman. On a base level women are the child bearers and nurturers. Men are the providers and protectors. At least that's the way it's supposed to work. Does either job raise one parent above the other? And what about the children raised by a grandparent or aunt or the children in foster care? What about them?
No I'm more apt to show my respect for another by the actions I do on a daily basis. I bought you your favorite ice cream. I did the dishes even the ones with baked on greese. I rented that movie you wanted to see for such a long time. I helped your relatives out of a jam. Because if you add it all up it comes out to something far greater than buying some cheezy card or being stupid enough to buy mom a new vacuum cleaner.
But the greatest gift a child can give a parent is for them to be happy and sucessful. Nothing gives mom more pleasure than to say my son/daughter is happy as a (fill in the blank) because she knows that she had a big part in what they became.

Teach your children well moms...

April fools indeed

I wanted to put a photo of the weather out my window but I'm just to lazy to drag out the digital video camera and cut a snipet to post but let me just say that it's snowing here. Snow is something we only get about once or twice a year here usually in December or the early part of the new year. I can't think of a time we've had it in April. I guess it goes along with the GOP budget and the computer worm set to go off today. We're April Fools indeed if we buy into the GOP budget which sounds like more of the same BS they've been feeding us for the last 8+ years. You know - taxes cuts for rich = good, spending for poor = evil.

In looking at all this I can only hope that many CEOs and CFOs and any other Cs out there get laid off and must experience the stresses and suffering that their underlings have been going through. How does it feel now Mr manager now that you're just one heart attack away from loosing your house since you won't have coverage. Gee and you thought you'd have an easy time sending Jr. to college but now that his favorite university just raised tuition and froze enrollment your spawn might just have to try for the Jr college but they too are squeezed and aren't taking new bodies. Oh and I'm sure Mr. Manager will just love dealing with his local unemployment office which was outsourced to some private company with a bunch of lackies. And the number of offices were cut to save money. Good luck filing a claim. The backlog was around 4 weeks last time I checked and you'll need to push hard should some info on your claim is misread or missing. You'll have just loads of fun either sitting on hold for hours and once you get through you get to talk to sombody who barely speaks English and doesn't understand what you're trying to tell him anyway. He might just tell you to call back next week but then you of course lose this weeks' check because you didn't file on time. But don't worry he told you they might have it all straightened out in the next couple of weeks so continue to file your claims (which you've been trying to do but can't because the system is so overwhelmed and keeps telling you to try again later). Hey but don't worry you can always sign up for the food bank but oh that's right you get too much money on unemployment to qualify for that even though you might not have received a dime in the last 4 or 6 weeks. But then it wouldn't really matter because because the food banks are almost empty and all you'll get is a couple of boxes of macaroni if you get there early enough.
So you do all those wonderful networking things and call all of your old associates or at least the ones you didn't stab in the back when you did those big deals in 2006 and 2007. You find that they too aren't hiring in fact they're worring about their position but they won't tell that to you but you know it. You find that they are now working 4 day weeks and thinking about going to 3. You just know that expense accounts are cut and even the free coffee is no longer purchased.
You look at your options which aren't looking that great. You're too young to retire and too old to retrain. Who'd want to hire somebody for 6 or 7 years when they can hire a twenty something with 30 or 40 years ahead of them. You look at the lowest of options only to find that even they are all gone. The only ones that might be out there are temporary "on call" positions but since those that are working are so afraid of being replaced they'll show up near dead just to get one more day's pay. Should you be lucky enough to get some temporary work it just does wonders for your unemployment. It works something like this. Work one day and there is no effect to your claim. Two days and there usually isn't much effect. Three or four days and you're screwed. At three days you can make too much to get even a reduced check but with normal taxes and deductions on the pay check you get less than unemployment.

In all of this I could hope the those at the top of corporate America would feel the pain but then I'd only be trying to fool myself. Those at the top have their golden paraschutes and severance packages that for the rest of us could easily retire to the tropics. Here I sit playing an exersize in wasted logic so just call me your April Fool.

Triskaidekaphobia?

Huh? For those of you without a linguistics degree or too lazy to look it up that's merely the fear of the number 13. As tomorrow is Friday the 13. Hey didn't we just have one of those the other month? Yep and we've got one more again in November. Am I one of those fearful 13 fraddycats? No. I have a brother who was born on Friday the 13th in hospital room 1313 and according to mom she had 13 cents in her purse at the time.

The other week was no cussing week in LA county. Profanity has become strange of late. I've always considered profanity to be like hot spices of language. A little bit goes a long way. Too much and the "dish" gets ruined. Also there has been so many loopholes to saying the exact same things. Let's take Carlins seven dirty words as an example.

Sh** = poop,ka ka,doody,dump,defication and feces
Pi** = urinate,tinkle,pee,water
F*** = fornicate,intercourse,ball (not to forget)friggin,bloody and flaming
C*** = vagina,hole,hoo hoo,taco
Coc****** Can't think of a good one for that it seems to be fading from the language.
Mother****** = Not much there either unless you'd say mom pleaser. I'm you're Dad son that's my job I'm a MF. Unless of course you're a giggilo or adulterer.
T*** = bossums,rack,jugs, balloons

Then there's the little profanities that are loosing their meaning and punch because they've been over used. Son of a bitch is the male offspring of a female dog. Hey wouldn't that be a male puppy? How cute. Hell and damn was one mom used and I'd always reply "I don't know the woman".
I wonder why A-hole didn't make the list? That's a fairly derrogatory expression. An ass a small donkey type animal. Hey I may be an ass but don't they work for a living? I don't see penus on the list either. Now how can you have vagina and not penus? That's discrimination I tell you.
There's much more but that seems to be relegated to the far recesses of this old brain and best left there.

Chinese navy getting bored

It's a bad situation when some Chinese navy ships have nothing better to do than go after a contracted U.S. Navy ship. Geez I didn't know the military subcontracted ships as well.Mooning an adversary?
Back in the 60s our military used to drop marbles on Russian subs that they followed near the U.S. coast just to let them know that we knew they were there. Maybe we could go to a time of using pies and water ballons. Cream pies at 25 feet. You know you'll see this in the next comedy movie.

March has come in like a lion. It's snowing here. Not sticking much but still too cold for my tastes.

Picked up a part for my dishwasher door last week. The door spring broke (it is 30 years old). Went to the appliance store showed the guy the old part and he said follow me. We went around back where he had a bunch that were headed to recycle and pulled a spring off an old machine. I asked what I owned him and he said it's on the house. When I replace that machine you'll know I'll be back there if they give a fair price. Getting the newer spring in was no picnic. I didn't want to pull the whole machine out so there was about an inch and a half space to work (yea and I do have small hands). After figuring out exactly how it went in it flipped off the first time but seated nicely the second.

Not much else going on right now. Keep your drum upright.

Mixed bag

Oil - I see the speculators are coming back into the markets as oil is at over $43. It's been said that there's no gouging going on. I say bull. There so much oil out there that we're swimming in it and the price isn't going down? Give me a break. They're taking old oil tankers and using them to store oil until the price goes up. Isn't that called hoarding?
More people are backing out of Obama nominations. Can you blame them? Looking at this mess I'm sure it's going to take 16 hour days to turn things around. Then there's all theose guys who still need to do their taxes.
The obstructionist (er republican) party has stalled the spending bill and a temporary bill to keep things going was passed. I wonder if they wanted to sneak more pork in it for the red states before a final vote comes next week.
Health care - That's another mess. We spend $2 trillion per year on it as a nation. That cost will go up as the population ages and more of us hit retirement. Which brings us to the 800 lb. gorilla that nobody wants to talk about social security. The peak for baby boomers will be between 2016 to 2020. After that things only get worse. There was a point where 5 workers were paying into the fund (actually it went into the general fund and was never set aside) for every retired worker. By 2016 it will be down to 2 to 1 or less. This was a Ponzi scheme that lasted for what 70 years? It might have worked if they had kept the original concept of providing a small supplimental income to help in retirement. It was never ment to be the only source of retirement funds. Problems came when it was expanded to include extensive disability payments and dependent payments. At this point I'd be glad just to get out of it what I paid into it with a little interest. I think the last I checked my statement I'm worth more dead than I am alive. I wonder if they still give a $255 death benefit? Just about enough to put me in a body bag and cart me out to the dumpster.

The fickle finger of fate

As I mentioned the other day there are some days that nothing goes right and you're better off just packing it in and going home. Well today was the other side of the coin. Went to the clinic for lab work and to straighten out a bill. They had sent me a bill that went back over a year. And here in lies a lesson. If you get a bill that you know you don't owe get off your butt and see a person face to face with the evidence in hand. As it turned out the computer was set to credit my account everytime I paid which I do everytime I go so there's no balance. The computer didn't do that and spit out a bill for $250. Now some people would have just paid it without thinking. I won't do that since I have no balance and get a nice discount for the pay as you go method.
In my shopping trip I found a few other things I had looked for the last time out as well as something for $20 that I had seen for $50. Things went so well I should have bought a lottery ticket.

In other news it appears Obama is continuing to undo the mess that Bush has given us.

No more no bid contracts for Iraq
Funding for EPA and Superfund (Thanks Barrack that's up my alley)
Money for Veteran health care
Funding for National Sciences (hey somebody figured global warming is real)
Funding for Cops (remember Clinton wanting to put 100,000 more cops on the street)
Funding for the military (this is for rebuilding run down barricks and other buildings)
That's just a part of it. It's 407 pages and I can't really say I fully understand all of the aspects of the bill but it is pretty clear where Obama wants to take the country. If we can get even a part of the way there in the next year we'll be doing well. Will there be more spending? I'd say so. But as we saw trickle down economics does not work so the help must come from the bottom up not the top down.

One of those days

Made a nice little to do list yesterday and then proceeded to have one of those nothing goes right days. Went to the clinic to have some regular lab work and straighten out a bill. Sometimes I feel like a lab rat. Once per year they do a physical. I feel like that's only to make sure I'm still breathing. Hey he's still warm he's good to go. Then of course there's the blood draws for heavy metals when we work on those types of jobs.
So I get to the clinic only to find out that they're out sick. Call before you come next time I'm told. They're getting to be as bad as dentists. Most dentists around here only work three or four days a week.
Went to the next item on the list. Pick up a phone calling card for a relative. He's a bit disabled and only has limited local service on a cheap cell phone. Went to one store and find that they stopped selling those about three weeks ago. Strike one. Go to another store. They had some off brand service at a rediculous price. Strike two. Go to one last store and find they only have one card that they wanted $80 for and they wouldn't take a check as payment. Strike three. I said the heck with it and went home. I guess some days you just can not win so it's time to give up and call it quits because that spirit or karma or whatever you want to call it is just working against you. You ever notice that? There are times that no matter what you do things turn out wrong. Then there are those rare occasions when everything goes right no matter what you do. Unfortunately the wrongs always seem to outnumber rights.

They say you can screw things up but to really screw things up use a computer. I say if you really really want to screw things up let a couple dozen legislators get together.

I forgot about that Blog Amnesty Day thing. There's a bunch of good little blogs out there that I read but don't have in my sidebar because I feel if that real estate has to many links it begins to look like wallpaper and nobody will bother to check any of the links. Ever go to a blog that has so many links at the side you could spend a lifetime clicking links? That to me seems like a diservice and an insult to the person you linked to. Ya I kind of liked your blog so I thought I'd slap a link in the side with the other ten thousand I have there. Kind of like throwing something in the kitchen junk drawer never to really be seen again.

So with those thoughts in mind I would like to add a few names to the sidebar. And rest assured you do mean more to me than just some blip on a radar screen.

Sadly a few of the blogs need to be deleted. Not because they go beyond any of my standards of morality (hell I'm as imoral as the next guy) but because due to some personnal reasons those bloggers had to stop blogging. I just hope that I can stay mentally competent enough to leave a parting shot before departing this earth. Much like Charles Shultz before his departure. He did Peanuts until the day before he died.

And to Crum: Thanks for the motivation. Always need a springboard now and then. This post wasn't too long was it?
