Happy Blogiversary to Me (belated)

Almost slipped my mind that two years ago yesterday I started this blog. Why? I don't know. I had been posting comments on a couple of blogs and the guys there (Blah3 in particular) encouraged me to start my own. But I must say I much prefer to comb other blogs and leave a little snark here or there like a hit and run driver. I also like to research current topics to find those overlooked tidbits that MSM never seems to bring out in the open. So sorry if you missed the party. It wasn't much but the cat had fun.

Depression era cooking

I remember surviving the recession of the early eighties and was just thinking how we made it through. About all we had at that time was a large bag of flour and those big blocks of government cheese. So what do you make that's balanced. Pizza of course! With a large jar of tomato sauce and whatever left over veggies or meat it makes a very balanced diet and by making it yourself it has less in the way of fat (except the cheese) and salt. So that's one of the things we live off of for several months. Needless to say I couldn't eat pizza for a long time after that. But that got me to thinking about other meals for surviving the depression. Any favorite poor boy receipes you'd care to add just leave them in the comments. Remember we're all in this together.

Happy Anniversary to your blog!

Hmmm. We make something that my mother-in-law used to make called, I believe fleischke. It's bohemiam. Very easy, very quick, very cheap.

Some ham steak cut into small chunks, a bag of wide egg noodles, a small can of peas drained or about 1 cup of frozen peas cooked in plain water until hot. About 3 tablespoons of milk, a couple of tablespoons of butter or margarine.

Cook the noodles, drain and mix with the rest of the ingredients, add a dash of pepper.

You keep bringing that up and I have no idea what you are talking about because I had it made in the 80's.

I had more than enough frigging money for everything I wanted. I have not seen a single day in my adult life when I did not have some money and plenty of food.

Even if I didn't work for a few months.

Helen is a bohemian (it's spelled with an n, Lisa, not that I give a crap about a misspelling, we all do it), she can tell you all sorts of stories about going through the great depression and what they ate.

At times the men took a baked potato to work with them for lunch, that is all, be thankful if you have a baked potato, I would be.

Not that it's a big deal now, I have more frigging food here than I know what to do with.

Some of it I brought here 11 years ago. Nothing fancy, just the basics, I'm okay with the basics, they are what I fix most days and Helen raves about them.

When I do cook a steak she wants nothing to do with it so I fix her fucking hot dogs.

The only thing a fucking hot dog is good for is slow roasting over a campfire to convert it into something you can enjoy eating.

Other than that it's just a fucking hot dog, ha ha ha.

You're not even close to hungry, I'll know when you are close to hungry when you drop your ISP and start blogging from the library.

You know, Demeur. I don't know why any of you put up with BBC. I'm done commenting here.

This was our family favourite, coming in from the cold in the evening after chores to hot pudding right out of the oven:
Hard Times Pudding
1 cup flour
1 cup raisons
½ cup milk
2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp shortening
pinch of salt

Mix in dry ingredients.
Cut in shortening.
Add raisons, milk and stir lightly with fork.

Mix sauce:
1 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp butter or marg
1 ¾ cup boiling water

Pour over dough.
Bake 30 – 35 mins at 375 F.
Serve warm.

Happy blogiversary.
Lisa, BBC has a POV and he's not close to being as irritating as some people on the blogisphere.

Lisa - I don't feel "better". I'm saying that I've run into worse, e.g., amazingly racist vitriol.
I feel like that's damning him with faint praise, I suppose. I don't even know the man, except through this blog.

What is a POV?

Lisa is spoiled, I irritate spoiled people, and that isn't going to change.

Spoiled people irritated Jesus also, duh.

Mac and cheese with tuna in spring water. Drain the tuna and out it in after the 'cheese' gets stirred in. Tastes pretty great actually.
