You make a good point. Communism was and is violently opposed to unions. All forms of totalitarian government are. Since America (Canada too)has been pretty much anti-union since the birth of the nation, one wonders about the state of democracy (in both countries).

My point with unions is that if a CEO can negotiate pay and benefits then why can't a worker do the same?

To carry the point a bit farther, why can't a worker tell the HR person hiring him or her, "Oh, and I want a screw-up clause, so that if you feel I've made a big, costly mistake or am just doing a lousy job, I get to take nine months' pay and benefits with me when you show me the door."
